Safer Communities Officers are a uniformed team who work towards tackling the causes of anti-social behaviour and improving the quality of our local environment, through investigating and dealing with complaints both reactively and proactively, relating to:
Safer Communities Officers also work closey with the Environmental Enforcement Team and Waste Services, to resolve issues such as environmental crime and street cleaning.
Officers also attend a number of Neighbourhood Watch, Partners And Communities Together (PACT) and Resident Association meetings in order to become a focal point for the local community to raise concerns and help reduce anti-social behaviour in their local area.
The officers have powers to deal with all of the above issues and also have the the same powers as a constable in uniform, to give a person a fixed penalty notice if they see someone acting in an anti social manner. This includes dropping litter, dog fouling and more.
To reduce anti-social behaviour, officers work mostly in the communities. They are on duty seven days a week between 5.30am and 9.30pm.
Under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 (www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1998/19980037.htm), the officers have additional powers to assist in dealing with anti-social behaviour. These include the sharing of information with other agencies to make sure that anti-social behaviour and criminality are not tolerated. Officers work together with other agencies, including the police and housing providers, to make sure that anti-social behaviour in Medway is dealt with as efficiently as possible.
Contacting Safer Communities Officers
To maximise the amount of time that officers spend working in Medway's communities, there are dedicated co-ordinators, who work during normal office hours, Monday to Friday. All requests for service at these times should go through the co-ordinators, who collate and prioritise the requests, then direct the officers. The co-ordinators also investigate enquiries and complaints and respond to them on behalf of Safer Communities Officers.
Safer Communities Officers are not a first response unit. If you need help urgently, dial 999. If it is not an emergency, call the police on 01634 891055. Officers cannot be contacted directly out of office hours but there is a voicemail service for messages to be left. These calls will be dealt with on the next working day.
To get help please use the contact information below or complete and return a service request form (pdf 58KB). To use this file you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer, please use our advice page.
