These are ceremonies for couples who are already legally married to each other and who wish to celebrate their marriage by renewing their vows in a special ceremony.
They are often associated with special anniversaries such as tenth, silver, ruby and gold but no significant event is necessary and they are equally appropriate and enjoyable at any time that a couple wish to celebrate their marriage. Often, when couples have married abroad, their families and friends may not have been with them and they may decide on a renewal of vows ceremony when they return home to celebrate their marriage with all those who could not be there.
Ceremonies can include:
- introduction and welcome;
- acknowledgement of any children of the marriage;
- reading;
- renewal of vows;
- rededication of ring(s);
- giving of new ring(s) or gift(s);
- words from previous wedding guests;
- further reading;
- signing of certificate;
- closing words.
The ceremonies have no legal effect but souvenir certificates are signed by the couples and the witnesses. Ceremonies can last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on which options are chosen and how many readings are selected and couples need not live in Medway to have their ceremony here.
The ceremonies are conducted by celebrants according to the choices the couple makes. They can take place at venues licenced for ceremonies. Please contact the Register Office for more information.
The costs are shown on the Fees page and for further information, please contact the Register Office, where the staff will be very pleased to advise you and discuss ceremonies with you.
