If the details of where or when a birth, death or marriage occurred are not known, it is possible to search both local and national indexes.
If the events occurred within the Medway Council area it is possible to visit the Medway Register Office to search the local indexes. An appointment is needed to make a search and this can be made by contacting the office using the details at the bottom of this page or by using the online form. A fee is payable to make a search.
The national indexes for the period from 1 July 1837 to 31 December 1960 can be searched without charge at the Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre where copies are held on microfiche.
The national indexes can also be searched without any fee at The National Archives at Kew until March 2009. Please see www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details of services provided there.
