Blythswood Care

The Rochester Depot is part of this UK-wide Christian charity formed in 1966. It uses donated goods to support individuals, organisations and projects locally and globally, helping needy people, regardless of their ethnic origins, religion or political beliefs. The value of goods given away has been more than £20million from 2003 to 2005.

The new depot has a shop selling new and re-used donated items, including cycles, furniture and small electrical goods at affordable prices. All funds are used for charitable purposes.

The five staff are helped by volunteers doing lots of jobs, including sorting and packing goods, driving, administration, fundraising and organising social events.

Blythswood Care has an annual shoebox appeal for Christmas with a target of 100,000 gift boxes for children, young people and adults. To make contact or to discuss volunteering opportunities, the contact details are below.

Hope in the Community Ltd (HitC)

The aim of HitC is to involve voluntary and community workers, particularly in the faith sector, in a national strategy.

HitC aims to create and co-ordinate a network of regeneration teams for access by churches and faith groups. The network would build on existing work whenever possible and use and develop existing key players.

HitC will work through both newly-formed and existing faith community networks:

  • to build capacity;
  • to deliver projects;
  • to share experience;
  • to promote good practice;
  • to research funding sources from local, national and European sources;
  • to offer support for bringing together partnerships, writing business plans, submitting bids and monitoring projects;
  • to offer continuing support in areas such as payroll and accounting;
  • to provide opportunities for strategic and regional initiatives, including offering a framework for funding streams;
  • to evaluate successful bids and establish best practice.
