Paying your bill

These are the different ways that you can pay your bill:

Direct debit

Medway Council strongly recommends the use of direct debit. There are a number of advantages:

  • it saves you time – you no longer have to queue or write out cheques;
  • it saves you money – there are no stamps to buy and no specific charges for the service;
  • it gives you peace of mind – your instalments are paid regularly by the due date;
  • lower administration costs – the council’s handling costs are reduced, which in turn helps to keep the council tax for the area as low as possible;
  • you are protected against errors – you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your bank if an error is made.

You can ask for a direct debit form to be sent to you.

By credit or debit card online

Payment can be made online using a credit or debit card. Please have your council tax account number to hand.

Cash should not be sent by post.

At a bank or post office

Please use a payment slip from your payment book or the tear off slip from your bill.

If paying into a bank, your cheque should be made out to Medway Council. The bank may charge a fee for this service. Please allow five working days for payment to reach your council tax account.

If paying into a post office, your cheque should be made out to Post Offices Lts. Please allow five working days for payment to reach your council tax account.

You can request for a further supply of payment slips to be sent or contact Medway Revenues and Benefits service for more information.

By standing order

You can set up a standing order to pay your council tax direct from your bank account. Please quote the council's sort code of 57-17-50 and account number of 000000. You must also quote your council tax account number.

You can ask for a standing order form to be sent or contact Medway Revenues and Benefits service for more information.

Please allow five working days for payment to reach your council tax account.

Please note that a standing order is an instruction to your bank from yourself to pay. Medway Council cannot change or vary amounts paid on a standing order. If you do not want to complete a new instruction each time your installment account changes, you may prefer to pay by direct debit.
