Services for the environment 10 per cent

Where the money comes from

Government grant43 per cent
Fees and charges and external service grants     41 per cent
Council tax16 per cent

How the council tax is worked out

The total amount to be met from council tax is calculated and then divided by the number of properties in Medway. The result is the amount payable for a band D property. A figure is then calculated for each of the eight bands (A-H) shown on the right, in accordance with the fractions of the band D figure set out in council tax legislation.

Each domestic property is allocated to one of these eight bands . The band is based on the market value of the property as at 1 April 1991. The banding is determined by a government agency, the Valuation Office Agency (www.voa.gov.uk) and any disputes over the banding of a property should be directed to the Valuation Office Agency not the council.
