Interreg IVA replaces the Interreg IIIA programme for the period 2007-2013, contributing to cross-border co-operation between countries of the European Union (EU). The overarching principle of the Interreg programme is that national borders should no longer be an obstacle to the balanced development and integration of the EU. There are two different Interreg IVA programmes for which Medway is eligible, alongside the other UK eligible areas. The first programme, France (Manche) – England, has been allocated a budget of €178million (£120million) for the period 2007-2013 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the objective European Territorial Co-operation. The eligible areas on the French side are from Brittany to Somme and on the UK side, the South and East coasts of England, from Cornwall to Norfolk.

The second programme, the England-France-Flanders-Netherlands programme, has been allocated a budget of €161million (£108million) from the ERDF for a similar period and funds cross-border projects between French partners in Nord Pas de Calais, Flanders in Belgium and the south-west of Netherlands (please refer to the map above) and UK partners from the south and east coasts of England, from Cornwall to Norfolk.
