Medway Council is committed to equality of opportunity and access. In May 2002, as part of this commitment, the council published its Corporate Equalities Strategy and a race equality scheme, which set out the council’s vision, aims and objectives on equalities. An annual report is also produced which sets out the council’s progress against these aims and objectives and identifies new issues for the council.
The strategy set out a wide-ranging approach to equalities, which included issues relating to race, disability, gender, sexual orientation and age. In the strategy the council identified six main areas where it wanted to take action, these were:
- workforce monitoring and increasing the representativeness of the workforce;
- service monitoring;
- mainstreaming equalities and understanding the impact of policy;
- consultation, information and access;
- increasing awareness and support for staff;
- external accreditation.
In each of these areas, the council has set itself a number of targets. The purpose of the annual report is to set out the council’s progress against these targets and to recommend further actions which the council should take in the following year. The report for 2008 is due to be considered by the council's cabinet in November.
