The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 (the Act) came into force in April 2001. It places a duty on all public authorities to promote race equality. In response to this legislation the council published its first Race Equality Scheme by 31 May 2002.
This document (pdf 310KB) is the most recent update of the scheme. To use this and the other pdf files on this page, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer, please use the advice page.
The aim of the Race Equality Scheme is to show how the council plans to fulfil its legal obligations under the Act, through setting out an action plan for improvement and change and identifying clear targets that the council will use to measure its progress. The scheme forms part of the council’s overall strategy to promote equality for all of the people of Medway.
In May 2007, a report (pdf 35KB) was produced to outline the progress made against the targets set in the 2005 Scheme and to update the first annual review of May 2006. The lead officers in all service areas were asked to report on progress against their allocated targets. Full details of performance on all equality targets are shown in appendix 1 (pdf 114KB) to the report.
The council’s commitment to equal opportunities is detailed in its Equalities Strategy and Equal Opportunities Policy. The scheme also supports one of the council’s core values: working for equal opportunities and access. The council is fully committed to supporting and promoting equalities for the people of Medway.
