How to pay the council

There is a wide range of ways to pay your bill, including places where you can pay with cash.

  • Paying by direct debit or standing order

You can pay many council bills by direct debit or standing order. It's safe, easy to set up and you won't risk missing a payment. Direct debits for rent payments will be available later in the year. For more information phone:

    • 01634 332222 (council tax or business rates),
    • 01634 333456 (rent payments),
    • 01634 332819 (sundry debtor payments).
  • Paying with a debit or credit card

If you'd like to pay using a debit or credit card, you can do this online anytime. Alternatively, phone 01634 334477 or 01634 333128 (Monday to Friday 9am-4.30pm) or visit any Medway Council contact point.

  • Paying by cheque

Send a cheque or postal order made out to Medway Council to:

    Medway Council
    Gun Wharf
    Dock Road
    Chatham
    Kent ME4 4TR

Please write your account reference number on the back of your cheque. Receipts will only be sent where a stamped, addressed envelope is included with your payment. Please don't send cash by post.

  • Paying by cash

You can pay your council rent by cash safely and securely using an Allpay card at more than 40,000 conveniently situated outlets nationwide, wherever you see a PayPoint or Pay Zone sign. There are more than 50 outlets accepting payments in Gillingham. Search the full list of outlets at www.allpay.net/outlets. If you don't have an Allpay card, phone 01634 333500 for more information.

You can also use cash to pay a wide range of council bills, including council tax, business rates and rent, at post offices and banks. Please use a payment slip from your payment book or the tear-off slip from your bill. If paying into a bank, your cheque should be made out to Medway Council. The bank may charge a fee for this service. Please allow five working days for payment to reach the council. If paying into a post office, your cheque should be made out to Post Offices Ltd. Again, please allow five working days for payment to reach the council.

Cash and cheques can also be deposited at Chatham contact point (next to Chatham library) using the automated till. Payments must be made using an appropriate payment slip or other information to identify the payment.
