Electronic government

E-government is a part of local government modernisation and will result in greater accountability and participation. It means using new technologies to deliver improved and more accessible public services.

The government's target is for councils to be able to provide 100% of services electronically by 2005. In Medway, this means providing electronic information and where appropriate, transactions for more than 700 different services. Medway Council expects the percentage of services available electronically to reach:

  • 90% by March 2004
  • 100% by March 2005.

As part of this process, the government requires every council to produce Implementing Electronic Government (IEG) Statements reporting the progress of the work and future plans.

Implementing Electronic Government (IEG) returns are an essential part of the national monitoring process for assessing electronic service delivery capability against the 2005 target.
