The Audit Commission reached this overall rating by looking at:

  • how Medway Council’s main services perform;
  • how Medway Council uses its resources;

The Commission said Medway Council is improving services it knows are important to local people.

The report says considerable progress has been made on improving the local environment through exceeding the government's targets on:

  • recycling,
  • tackling litter levels and
  • developing more green spaces for community use.

On protecting vulnerable children, unallocated social work cases have reduced considerably, though hampered by continuing high levels of social worker vacancies.

In partnership with other agencies, the council is working well to deliver better services for older people.

Other successes include:

  • provisional key stage results in schools showing improvement at all stages;
  • reduced waiting times for delayed hospital discharges.

The report says that success in reducing crime in partnership with the police is mixed.

Securing value for money and improving efficiency is at the heart of service improvement and the council's success in improving value for money is good. The council's track record of delivering improved services is strong.

Robust improvement plans are in place to continue developing innovative services. It is building its capacity well to deliver its priorities through efficiencies and effective partnership working. Financial planning is good.
