Local Area Agreement 2008

The council and its partners involved in Medway's Local Strategic Partnership have worked together to develop Medway's second Local Area Agreement (LAA). The agreement reflects the council's priorities for improving Medway and sets out the high level outcomes that local people, stakeholder organisations and central government want to see achieved between April 2008 and March 2011. The outcomes set out in the new LAA have been identified and agreed through the Medway Local Strategic Partnership, involving all key local partners and stakeholders as part of a comprehensive exercise to refresh Medway’s Community Plan. The Community Plan and Local Area Agreement are companion documents, with the LAA taking forward the elements of the Community Plan that will most benefit from co-ordinated activity and partnership effort. The proposed outcomes in the LAA strike a balance between local and national priorities and reflect the impact of the major regional developments of the Thames Gateway (www.thamesgateway.gov.uk) and the London 2012 Olympics.

Medway is a city in the making. It is a unique urban area in the heart of the Thames Gateway, a national priority for regeneration and growth. More than £120 million of Sustainable Communities funding will enable the Local Strategic Partnership to attract far more private investment to transform Medway over the next 20 years. Reacting to the changing face of Medway, the Local Strategic Partnership is working towards a vision of Medway as a city of learning, culture, tourism and enterprise. This vision has focused the development of the Community Plan, the LAA and the local outcomes and indicators within them.

The Local Strategic Partnership is moving forward with a stronger focus on making a difference and becoming the driving force behind real change in Medway. It has set challenging targets around five main priority issues:

  • children and families;
  • a safer and stronger Medway;
  • health, wellbeing and older people;
  • economic development and skills;
  • regeneration, environment, culture and housing.

The partners have given a commitment to playing their part in making sure the LAA outcomes are at the heart of the activities they will work on together for the benefit of Medway, the place and its people.

Medway's new LAA document (pdf 71KB) is available to download. The previous LAA document (pdf 740KB) set out how the LAA was developed, how its performance was managed and overseen, how it reflected the needs and priorities of Medway and how the partnership tackled those needs and priorities.
