In 2001 there were 9,804 full-time students and schoolchildren aged 16 to 74 in Medway. Of these, 4,522 were aged 18 and over. These figures come from the 2001 Census, where students were enumerated at their term-time address.

Of the resident population aged 16 to 74, 30 per cent had no qualifications, while 12 per cent were qualified to degree level or higher.

Within Medway in 2001, 76 per cent of households were living in owner-occupied accommodation, whilst 13 per cent lived in social rented housing (renting from the council, a housing association or a registered social landlord) and the remaining 11 per cent rented privately, or lived rent free.

The proportion of one-person households in Medway was 27 per cent. This compared to an England and Wales average of 30 per cent.

The proportion of lone parent households in Medway with dependent children was seven per cent, compared to the England and Wales average of six per cent.
