Townscape Heritage Intiative scheme

The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI)was a grant-giving programme for the repair and regeneration of the historic environment supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Medway Council with a total of £1.6 million pounds available in grant aid.

The main aim of the THI was to make possible the continued use of historic buildings with highest priority given to the repair of buildings and to bring derelict and under-used historic buildings back into use.

The scheme aimed to revitalise a whole area rather than just individual buildings, with grants also available for public spaces. Applications for grants could be made until April 2008, when the scheme ended.

Where is the THI Area?

The map below shows the Rochester and Chatham Riverside THI area. It is a tightly packed mix of industrial, commercial and residential buildings mainly dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Set along the River Medway, the area forms part of the Star Hill - Sun Pier conservation area and links the centres of Rochester and Chatham.

Grants were available for the:

  • structural and external repair of historic buildings;
  • reinstatement of architectural features, e.g. windows and traditional shop-fronts;
  • repair and reinstatement of lost public realm works, e.g. the reinstatement of stone paving slabs.

Repair grants covered 60 per cent of the total cost of works. Grants for architectural reinstatement could cover up to 75 per cent of the cost of works. In some cases deficit grants were available which funded the deficit created when the cost of work completed was greater than the resulting value of the restored property. Anyone who owned a historic building in the THI area could have been eligible for a grant.
