Environmental health services
The Environmental Health Service covers a broad range of functions that are carried out by two teams - Environmental Protection and Food and Safety.
Environmental protection
The Environmental Protection Team is concerned with safeguarding Medway's surroundings and ensuring that the quality of its environment is maintained and improved. This covers a broad range of issues, including dealing with complaints about noise, smells, dust and smoke. The team enforces controls aimed at minimising the effect of industry on the local environment and the control of noise from construction sites. Officers in this team also administer the pest control service, deal with drainage issues and carry out animal licensing functions.
Advising Medway Council's planners on environmental health issues, monitoring air quality and inspecting industrial processes are part of this team's day to day activities. An increasingly important aspect of the work relates to areas of land that could have been contaminated by previous uses. The council has a written programme for inspecting sites in Medway.
