Continuing air quality monitoring and a detailed assessment of air quality in Medway has highlighted five new areas where nitrogen dioxide is above the annual mean objective. Medway currently has six separate Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) but five of these now need to be extended. Monitoring has also shown that the Maidstone Road, Chatham AQMA can be revoked, however.
Medway Council is now required to declare these new and extended areas as AQMAs and is proposing to do this by revoking the current six areas and replacing them with one large central area and two smaller ones. Maps of the proposed new AQMAs are available to download:

Once the AQMAs have been declared, the council will be required to carry out a further assessment of existing and likely future air quality within 12 months. Medway’s current Air Quality Action Plan will also need to be updated within 12 to 18 months of the declaration.
