Infectious diseases

There are 30 diseases that must legally be reported to Medway Council. These are known as notifiable diseases and they include:

  • dysentery;
  • tuberculosis (TB);
  • rubella;
  • scarlet fever;
  • salmonella and other food poisoning.

The council's food and safety team is responsible for investigating the source and controlling the spread of notifiable and some non-notifiable diseases.

People who may be suffering from one of these are advised to contact their GP, who may then take a faecal specimen for diagnosis. The results of this will then be formally notified to the food and safety team, who may then contact them. Workers in food-handling environments are obliged to report any food poisoning illness to their employers. Contact the food and safety team for people in certain risk groups, such as:

  • children aged less than five who attend nurseries, playgroups etc.;
  • people with learning disablities or special needs;
  • health care workers who have direct contact with patients or their food.
