Abnormal loads

up arrow : go up one level Environment

An abnormal load is a load that cannot, without undue expense, risk or damage, be divided into two or more loads for the purpose of being carried on a road.

When hauliers wish to move abnormal loads, they must notify the highway and bridge authorities for the routes they intend to travel and gain their consent before moving. Notice periods vary from a few days to several months, depending on the size of the load. Loads can be as much as 400 tonnes.

Routes are agreed in advance with Medway Council officers who check for low bridges, underground structures and width restrictions. Many such loads require a police escort and on occasions, need to be moved at weekends to minimise disruption.
