If you are interested in developing a career as a gardener or working in a nursery or garden centre, Cozenton Nursery could be just right for you. An innovative range of training, personal development and work experience opportunities is on offer to help prepare people for the horticultural job market.

Cozenton Nursery is at Cozenton Park in Rainham, Kent. Training takes place there, although work experience could be anywhere in Medway and the surrounding area. The course lasts for 13 weeks.

If you are on any of the following benefits, you could be eligible to become a Cozenton student:

Being on the course will not affect your benefits and you will be entitled to some travel and expenses.

Trainees at Cozenton Nursery:

  • perform real jobs in a real work environment;
  • gain up-to-date skills, experience and references;
  • gain a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 1 (www.qcda.gov.uk/13408.aspx) in horticulture.

Cozenton Nursery offers more support to help people get a job in horticulture, including learning about:

  • maintaining safe and effective working practices;
  • planting and establishing plants;
  • maintaining plants;
  • transporting materials within the workplace;
  • maintaining grass surfaces;
  • maintaining structures and surfaces;
  • propagating plants;
  • harvesting, collecting and preparing crops;
  • identifying the presence of and controlling common pests and diseases;
  • preparing growing materials.

Work experience

Trainees work with a local employer, usually for one day per week. Previous students have worked with:

Trainees take part in employment guidance sessions to provide the tools and techniques needed to apply for a job, including:

  • careers advice;
  • creating a curriculum vitae (CV);
  • writing a letter applying for a job;
  • preparing for an interview.

Afterwards

Cozenton Nursery is keen to keep in touch and to help trainees where possible. Once training is finished, they have access to staff at Cozenton Nursery and to other opportunities to help them into work.
