Buses

The majority of bus services in Medway are provided by Arriva Medway Towns, although companies such as ASD Transport, Nu-Venture and others also provide services in this area.

The operators provide many of the daytime routes without a subsidy and therefore the operator decides the route, timetable and fares. Medway Council does, however, support a number of bus services financially that would not be provided otherwise and is keen to encourage greater use of the bus network overall.

There is an increasing number of super low-floor buses in service, giving easy access for users. However, where people have difficulty in using the main bus network, the Medway Mobility Service offers a link to the main shopping centres.

Changes to bus service 151 (Chatham - Cuxton - Halling - Snodland - West Malling - Kings Hill) due to the closure of the railway bridge at Halling from 4 to 29 August 2008

Due to maintenance works on Halling railway bridge the High Street at Halling will be closed from 4 to 29 August 2008. During this period, the 151 buses serving Halling Village will leave and enter the village from the Snodland end.

They will run to through Halling to Low Meadow, turn and return to the by-pass. Buses will serve all stops in this part of the village and an additional stop will be provided in Low Meadow. No buses will stop at Halling Station and the only buses serving Jade Hill will be those running to and from Upper Halling.

For full details, please download the amended 151 timetable (pdf 55KB).

No other services are affected.

Changes to 120/121 service between Otterham Park, Rainham and Chatham

With effect from Monday, 11 August, Arriva will be providing a service on the 120/121 route, following Nu-Venture's decision to withdraw from providing the service. The service will run Monday to Friday to a similar timetable to that provided by Nu-Venture with the exception of the 3.20pm service from Chatham. Most journeys will run via Medway Maritime Hospital and Gillingham but there will be other minor changes to the timetable. As a result of this change, the stop in Chatham will move from Military Road to Bay 8 inside the Pentagon Bus Station.

For more details, please download the amended 120/121 timetable (pdf 47KB).

Changes to bus services from 1 June 2008

Please note that from 1 June 2008 there are several changes occuring to Arriva's services in Medway.

  • Service 176 (Hazlemere Drive, Gillingham- Walderslade) will have its frequency increased to every 10 minutes during the day from Monday to Saturday. In Gillingham, the route is slightly amended. Buses will run between Chatham Hill and Medway Maritime Hospital via Rock Avenue, instead of via Jezreels and Canterbury Street.
  • To reduce congestion in the bus station at the Pentagon and to allow space for the extra service 176 buses, several bus services will use different bays. This will affect services 100, 101,116, 132, 140/141, 151, 164, 165/166/167, 176, 181, 182, 191, 193 196/796, 198, 338, 632, 675, 689, 700/701 and 711.
  • A number of services will have minor changes to their timetables to take account of two measures which will help to improve reliability. All buses approaching the bus station from the Luton Arches direction will run via The Brook instead of Best Street and Sir John Hawkins Way. The other general change is that three minutes will be added to the journey time of most buses running between Rochester and Strood. This will affect services 133, 136, 140/141, 172, 173, 191, 193, 198, 700, and 701.
For more details, please call Arriva on 0844 800 4411, visit the Chatham Travel Shop on the first floor of the Pentagon Centre or visit www.medwaymainline.co.uk.

Medway Bus Pass

The bus pass allows Medway residents aged 60 years or more and people with disabilities to travel by bus for free, except at morning peak times. From April 2008, this scheme was extended nationally, so that pass holders can travel for free across all of England from 9.30am (9am in Medway) to 11pm, Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on bank holidays.
