Medway’s recycling is going from strength to strength. We’re now recycling more than ever before – in 2006/2007 Medway recycled almost a third of its rubbish.
While this is a great achievement, there are real incentives for us to continue to recycle more. We still bury more than 87,000 tonnes of rubbish in landfill annually – the environmental and financial costs of this increase each year.
While recycling is obviously very important, reducing the amount of waste we produce in the first place is just as important. By making informed choices about what we buy and use, we can all make decisions that help reduce the amount we have to throw away.
This part of our website is designed to help you find out more about how you can recycle more. The blue box and bag scheme means you can recycle a wide range of items from home with collections made every fortnight.
You can further reduce the amount of waste from your home that goes into landfill by composting garden and kitchen waste at home or by using the council’s garden waste collection to take away and compost your garden waste.
The council’s recycling points and household waste and recycling centres provide recycling and disposal facilities for an even wider range of items.
For larger or bulkier items we recommend you investigate a reuse scheme to allow someone else to make use of items you no longer want. If that’s not possible, the council provides a bookable collection service for bulky items.
You can download a copy of our guide to recycling in Medway (pdf 1.7MB). To use this file you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer please use our advice page.
