Highway responsive maintenance

The purpose of the Highway Responsive Maintence section is to manage the provisions of the Highways Act 1980 (www.opsi.gov.uk/RevisedStatutes/Acts/ukpga/1980/cukpga_19800066_en_1) and other legislation relating to the use of the highway.

Its main functions are to:

  • supervise work on new and existing highways;
  • promote and manage work to preserve the safety of highway users, including work on public rights of way;
  • work with colleagues on the performance of the highway inspection function;
  • respond to requests for highway maintenance, safety and enforcement action.

Its main duties are to:

  • organise and supervise the construction of vehicle crossings (dropped kerbs);
  • maintain drains and gullies;
  • organise larger highway repairs, as well as repairs in difficult locations;
  • carry out highway condition assessments;
  • maintain street lighting;
  • investigate incidents on the highway that result in claims for personal injury against the council;
  • maintain road markings, road signs and other street furniture;
  • organise permanent closures of roads;
  • carry out and supervise diversions of public rights of way;
  • deal with highway emergencies;
  • advise on the definition of highway boundaries;
  • maintain highway records, including the local street gazetteer and digitised mapping;
  • name and number streets.
