The purpose of the Highway Responsive Maintence section is to manage the provisions of the Highways Act 1980 and other legislation relating to the use of the highway.
Main functions
- Supervising work on new and existing highways.
- Promoting and managing work to preserve the safety of highway users, including work on public rights of way.
- Liaison with colleagues on the performance of the highway inspection function.
- Responding to requests for highway maintenance, safety and enforcement action.
Main duties
- Organising and supervising the construction of vehicle crossings (dropped kerbs).
- Maintenaning drains and gullies.
- Organising larger highway repairs, as well as repairs in difficult locations.
- Carrying out highway condition assessments.
- Maintaining street lighting.
- Investigating incidents on the highway that result in claims for personal injury against the council.
- Maintaining road markings, road signs and other street furniture.
- Organising permanent closures of roads.
- Carrying out and supervising diversions of public rights of way.
- Dealing with highway emergencies.
- Advising on the definition of highway boundaries.
- Maintaining highway records, including the local street gazetteer and digitised mapping.
- Street naming and numbering.
