Safety

Medway Council is responsible for educating and informing present and future road users about appropriate behaviour and attitudes to the safety and convenience of others. The council provides teaching, guidance and materials for children throughout their school careers, from crossing the road for primary school children to attitudes to speed and safety for young people who will soon be eligible to drive.

The council works with schools to develop school travel plans and a positive attitude to walking or cycling to school. It runs cycling proficiency courses, minibus driver courses and trains and assesses school crossing patrols.

The Road Safety Plan (pdf 5,200KB) provides a framework for the council and its partners as the council works to achieve and exceed the targets that the government has set for reducing long-term casualties by the end of March 2011. To use this file, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer, please use our advice page.

Considerable casualty reductions have been made in the last five years, specifically in fatal and serious collisions. This plan will enable Medway Council to build on these gains and further improve the safety of all road users.
