SPECS (Speed Check Enforcement System) is a digital safety camera system providing point-to-point speed enforcement based on calculation of average speed. This is a unique system which is an excellent deterrent against speeding motorists. In Kent and Medway SPECS cameras have only previously been used to enforce temporary speed limits during roadworks - these have included sites on the M20 and M2.
The cameras will be introduced during Spring 2007 and will cover a route 4.7 miles (7.5km) from Christmas Lane to Thamesport. Over a three year period there have been 46 casualties on this section of the road including six deaths and a further six people seriously injured. The new system will enforce the current 40mph speed limit.
The new system has been jointly funded by Medway Council and Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership (www.kmscp.org/) and is costing in the region of £500,000.
Medway Council's Portfolio Holder for Frontline Services, Councillor Phil Filmer, said: "The people in Medway have been requesting safety cameras on the A228 for some time. The system that is to be installed has proved very effective at other locations in the country and we hope it will dramatically reduce casualties on this road. Medway Council is also pleased to be able to fund part of the costs alongside the Safety Camera Partnership to enable these further road safety measures to go ahead."
