Road safety resources

These resources are available free or on loan to help educate future and current road users. The Road Safety Team has many different resources for both short and long-term loan. If you wish to borrow or obtain any of these items, please use the contact details at the foot of this page.

Posters, leaflets and literature

A range of free posters, leaflets and literature is available from the Department for Transport Think! website (www.dft.gov.uk/think/mediacentre/246822). Depending on size, the Road Safety Team can order in bulk.

Talks and courses

The Road Safety Team offers several courses, including:

  • Junior Pedestrian Training (reception years), a classroom-based talk, lasting approximately 45 minutes, focuses on the basics of crossing the road, safer places to play and cross, as well as identifying people who can help;
  • School Crossing Patrol, where staff can explain to children how they must behave when crossing the road with a patrol;
  • Walking Bus, an informal informative chat with one of the team's officers for those who want to start up a walking bus;
  • School Travel Plan provides an informal chat with one of the team's officers for those who want to find out how your staff and students can benefit from a school travel plan.

Interactive resources

These resources are available on short-term loan only:

  • Street Feet
    The Street Feet resource is designed for three to seven-year-olds in a school hall or similar setting. It consists of road layouts with zebra and pelican crossings. Through role-play, it aims to develop the skills and awareness that young children need to cope with today’s traffic. For more information, visit www.frescointeractives.co.uk/streetfeet/index.html.
  • Fresco interactive kit
    This is designed to raise road safety issues and the effect that travel choices have on health and the environment.
  • Toucan pedestrian crossing
    This provides children with the opportunity to practice using a pedestrian crossing in the safety of their own school. This scaled-down toucan crossing is an excellent interactive and fun way to teach children to identify safer places to cross and how to use them properly.
