This document details the achievements during Local Transport Plan 1 (LTP1) and its impact on delivering the targets and objectives originally set out and the benefits to the community. This report was submitted to the government in July 2006.
Some of the key features during the period of the plan include the completion of over 1,700 schemes covering a wide range of road safety and integrated transport issues. These schemes have made our road network more accessible for the vulnerable and achieved a reduction in the number of casualties killed and seriously injured in road traffic accidents in Medway.
Much work has been carried out in conjunction with partners and includes the development of many work place and school travel plans. For example, at the end of LTP1 26 per cent of primary schools in Medway have walking buses in operation helping to reduce congestion outside schools at opening and closing periods. Furthermore 46 per cent of all Medway schools have now developed school travel plans.
There has been the commencement of significant regeneration projects along the banks of the River Medway and the transport impact of these major developments has been a significant challenge during LTP1 and will continue as the balance is sought with the impact of increased movement of people and goods against the benefits of regeneration to Medway. In addition major investment in the bus fleet by the main operator has been undertaken. Completion of a major public transport study called Transport for Medway was achieved, the results of which are being carried forward into Local Transport Plan 2 (LTP2) and beyond.
Partnership working has been seen as an important element of delivering the LTP1 serving Medway and is considered an important element for progression of the second Local Transport Plan which is now being implemented.
