The Homelessness Act 2002 (www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2002/ukpga_20020007_en_1) requires local authorities to carry out and publish a homelessness strategy for their district and it is within this context that Medway Council has set out its strategy to:
- continue to prevent homelessness through strong partnership working and early intervention;
- ensure that consistent and up-to-date advice is available and accessible to all;
- develop plans based on an understanding of need and the available options;
- increase access to settled accommodation;
- increase the supply of alternative non-social homes for homeless households.
On 27 January 2009 the council's cabinet adopted the revised Homelessness Strategy 2009-11 (pdf 931KB) subject to the Assistant Director, Housing and Corporate Services, in consultation with the Portfolio Holder for Community Services, being delegated authority to make minor changes to the strategy to ensure its accuracy.
The Homelessness Strategy allows the council's Housing Services to:
- take forward solutions for homelessness in a planned way, in conjunction with its partners;
- target its resources accordingly;
- address its statutory obligations.
