This is a very exciting time for Medway in terms of new development and new housing in the area. Medway occupies a key location in the Thames Gateway (www.thamesgateway.gov.uk) providing substantial opportunities for growth. With a population of about 250,000, Medway is the second largest conurbation in the south-east. The Housing Strategy and Development Service has seven members of staff and operates from the address below.
Medway Council's Cabinet adopted a new Housing Strategy on 5 August 2008 after an intensive period of consultation.
To assist the council in the development of its housing strategies, several surveys have been undertaken, aimed at identifying the underlying trends within the local housing market, changing population profiles and economic data. They include a:

It is important that housing development provides affordable housing to meet local needs and to encourage balanced communities. The council works with private developers, affordable housing partners and the Housing Corporation (www.housingcorp.gov.uk) to ensure that new affordable homes are provided within Medway.
As well as working to develop new homes, Medway Council works with owners of empty properties to bring them back into use and provide affordable, decent homes.
The Housing Strategy and Development Service is also leading on the development of Medway’s Fuel Poverty and Home Energy Conservation Strategy.
