People who wish to live in a council or housing association home must first join Medway Council's housing register.
There is a variety of housing to rent in Medway. 3,050 homes were owned and managed by the council, all located in Gillingham and Rainham, as at 9 February 2010. There are about 11,000 housing association homes throughout Gillingham, Chatham, Strood and Rochester, of which some 7,500 are owned and managed by mhs homes.
The number of people currently seeking a council or housing association home far exceeds the number of available homes. The council and the associations operate a banding policy within their HomeChoice scheme, therefore. This takes into account each household's circumstances, including medical and social problems, to ensure that people in greater need are given a higher priority. Many people face a long wait for social housing and people with lower housing need may not be re-housed at all.
