Sheltered housing

What is sheltered accommodation?

Medway Council operates a number of sheltered schemes for older people, including two Extra Care schemes for the frail elderly. Each scheme consists of a number of studio flats and some one-bed flats or one-bed bungalows designed specifically for those at or approaching retirement age. The Extra Care schemes are specially adapted to allow independent living for those with more complex health issues. Medway Council aims to provide comfortable homes at low cost for independent living in a secure environment with emergency support if it is needed.

Safe

Residents in our sheltered accommodation are provided with Medway Lifeline. This emergency call service means you can contact Medway Council's control centre for help in an emergency at any time.

All our sheltered homes have door entry systems with cameras so that staff at our control centre can keep an eye on who is coming and going.

Supported

Staff are available to help residents with problems, including providing advice on local services; liaising with other agencies, responding to queries on rents or dealing with repairs.

Comfortable and sociable

Each of our sheltered housing schemes has a comfortable communal lounge and regular social events and outings.

Improvements

The council is constantly striving to improve the quality of accommodation that is provided in our sheltered units. An ongoing project is the refurbishment work at Brennan House and St Marks House to modernise the accommodation. A programme of lift installation work is also planned for Brennan House, Suffolk Court and Marlborough House in 2005 and Esmonde House in 2006.
