Welcome to Learning
Medway Council is committed to realising everyone's potential and improving levels of achievement in the local community. The council believes firmly in the principles of lifelong learning and is dedicated to developing educational opportunities.
Medway has a relatively young population, with 19.2 per cent of its people aged 14 years or less. One of Medway Council’s top priorities is to ensure that young children are provided with the highest-quality opportunities to learn. Its early years development plan was singled out for praise by the government.
Medway has 108 schools, including six grammar schools, with a total of almost 43,000 pupils. Medway Council has an innovative approach to youth activities. Its Youth Parliament, was set up because Medway Council believes that young people can play a powerful role in reinvigorating local democracy and should be involved in issues and decisions affecting their future.
Medway Children's University is part of a national organisation that provides seven to 14 year-olds with exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours. It encourages and develops exploring minds that are enthusiastic about learning. It provides an exciting active environment that encourages purposeful, hands-on learning. Medway students’ commitment to learning was rewarded in 2008, when they became the first in the country to graduate at national Bronze level.
