Sign language British Sign Language (BSL) is the first or preferred language of between 50,000 and 70,000 deaf people in the UK and it is the language of the deaf community. If you are a beginner to sign language, you could join a basic course. Alternatively, you might consider joining a Level 1 course, which will give you a comprehensive introduction to British signing and a recognised qualification from the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People. If you have already successfully completed a Level 1 BSL certificated course, you could join the Level 2 course. For those who have had a break from studying BSL, there is a short course which will concentrate on revision and preparation for Level 2. This would also be useful for anyone currently on a Level 2 course who would like some additional practice.
