Information for schools

Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) and statutory induction

The information below covers everything needed by both a newly qualified teacher (NQT) and an induction tutor for the statutory induction of an NQT. The materials include assessment forms, advice, guidance and details of induction tutor training and centrally organised events for NQTs. There are also links to useful publications from the Teacher Development Agency (TDA).

There are several documents available for download on this page in Word format and you may not be able to open them. They are intended mainly for use by staff in Medway schools.

Medway induction arrangements

For Medway Council to provide funding to schools, track the progress of teachers in their statutory induction year and make the required returns to the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE), it is essential that schools register their NQTs with it. Please use the New Medway NQT form 2008/09 provided for this process. This form collects all the information needed. It is essential that headteachers ensure that Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) has been awarded before making arrangements to start induction. NQTs who have been awarded QTS should have a certificate or letter of confirmation. Headteachers need to see this.

All NQTs registered will receive:

Schools, NQTs or induction tutors may wish to print out these pages and any documents accessed via links on this page and if doing so, should provide an appropriate ring-binder. All NQTs coming from initial training establishments should bring with them the new Career Entry and Development Folder. This is a slim ring-binder that should have Part One completed by the training establishment. This binder will be large enough to accommodate the pages printed from this website but is not large enough for long-term development as a professional portfolio.

Assessment schedule

Assessment of NQTs 2008/09

For NQTs starting induction in September 2008, please note the following schedule for completing and returning assessment reports to the council at the end of Term 2, Term 4 and Term 6:

  • first assessment report - 12 December 2008;
  • second assessment report - 27 March 2009;
  • third and final assessment report - 13 July 2009.

Assessment forms can be found among the useful forms.

If NQTs leave a school at any point after registration and therefore do not complete induction there, the school must advise the council immediately, as it has a duty to make regular returns to the GTCE and is expected to keep track of teachers during their induction year. Failure to register and/or return assessment forms on time could delay payment to schools and/or the issue of Induction Certificates by the GTCE.

Funding

Each NQT attracts £3,400 to support their period of statutory induction. Allocations have been added to school budgets based on the number of NQTs employed in schools in the January preceding the current financial year. There are no adjustments during the year for any leavers or joiners. Please phone Medway Council's School Support Team on 01634 331258 if you have any queries about funding matters.

The council can only release funding if schools have registered their NQTs with it. If it does not know that an NQT has been appointed, it will not be able to pass on any money. If NQTs join a school any time after September and begin their induction, their details still need to be registered using the form provided below.
