Racism, in any form, is damaging to society in general and more specifically, to those groups against which it is directed. It has a harmful effect on pupils in Medway's schools. It lowers their self-esteem, has a detrimental effect on them as learners and leads to disaffection and low achievement. The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry report, the recommendations of which Medway Council has adopted, highlighted the dangers of institutional racism and raised wide-ranging implications for schools.
The Medway Council Guidelines for Schools (pdf 4,610KB) provide practical support and advice on overcoming racism. To use this file you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer, please use our advice page.
