Primary languages support in Medway

Lead consultant Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Provides strategic leadership in the subject across Medway’s primary schools. This means:

  • having a clear idea of the current picture, locally and nationally;
  • planning accordingly;
  • implementing local and national initiatives;
  • monitoring and evaluating progress and standards;
  • ensuring support is available to all staff and not duplicated unnecessarily;
  • exploiting consortium arrangements to deliver primary modern foreign language (PMFL) support;
  • liaison with secondary schools to improve transition from Key Stage 2 (KS2) to Key Stage 3 (KS3).

Supports primary schools in the subject. This means:

  • advising subject leaders on management issues;
  • advising on other sources of support;
  • identifying and disseminating good practice in the subject through primary schools in which languages are well established and well taught, Advanced Skills Teachers (AST), leading teachers, Language College and other secondary MFL departments;
  • advising on best practice in primary schools through In-Service Education and Training (INSET) and demonstration lessons;
  • developing and promoting the primary language pages on this website;
  • implementing a primary languages Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme;
  • purchase resources on behalf of schools.

Advisory teacher MFL

Supports primary schools in the subject. This means:

  • developing curriculum resources for use in school;
  • advising on best practice in primary schools through INSET and demonstration lessons;
  • helping schools make links with secondary partners through the cross phase network project;
  • supporting innovative teaching through managing the Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) project.

Language College - Chatham Grammar School for Boys

Supports primary schools by:

  • visiting with the puppet theatre (French, German);
  • providing Japanese workshops (singing, language, calligraphy, origami);
  • running language evening classes in French, German, Spanish and Japanese;
  • providing outreach teachers to work in schools to support local authority and national projects.

City Technology College with MFL Higher Performing Specialist Status (HPSS) - Chatham Grammar School for Girls

Supports primary schools by:

  • providing continuing INSET and support for partner primary schools.

Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs)

The MFL ASTs can be used to develop teacher expertise in any area of primary languages that a school has identified as requiring development. A typical allocation is four half-days of support, the timing of which is agreed between the school and the AST. The length of time provided may vary depending on the circumstances.
