Medway Council’s overall aim for education is that everyone should realise their full potential and make the best possible contribution to society. To meet that aim, its objectives are to:
- raise aspirations;
- promote the highest standards of teaching and learning;
- encourage lifelong learning and active citizenship;
- provide high quality and cost-effective services.
The council sees the promotion of and support for high educational standards as responsibilities for all staff providing services to children, as well as for all those working in schools. It believes that both local authority (LA) and school staff should share a commitment to seeking continuous improvement.
The council recognises that the responsibility for school improvement must, ultimately, rest with schools themselves. The LA’s role is to provide both support and challenge for schools, operating on the general principle of “intervention in inverse proportion to success”.
This strategy (pdf 214KB) seeks to explain Medway Council’s approach to promoting and supporting school improvement and is intended to complement the Education Development Plan and Curriculum Statement and align with the Code on LA - School Relations.
