Key Stage 1

All schools are required to teach the following subjects for Key Stage 1, which covers the National Curriculum for pupils aged five to seven years:

  • English
  • mathematics
  • science
  • design and technology
  • information and communication technology
  • history
  • geography
  • art and design
  • music
  • physical education
  • religious education.

At the end of Key Stage 1, national tests are carried out for all seven year-olds covering:

  • reading
  • writing
  • spelling
  • mathematics.

The results of Key Stage 1 tests are measured against national targets, which aim to show the level of  knowledge and ability each pupil should reach at the age of seven years.
