Transferring from primary to secondary school is an important step and Medway Council wants to help parents by giving them clear information about the transfer process and about Medway Council schools. Children normally transfer to secondary school in the September after their 11th birthday.
Each secondary school produces its own prospectus which contains detailed information about the school, how it is run and what is taught. These prospectuses are available from schools themselves. Schools also run open days and evenings where parents will be able to take a closer look at the school, meet pupils and staff, and ask questions. Parents can visit as many schools as they like to help them make up their minds about which school they would prefer for their child. Schools want to work in partnership with parents and will welcome enquiries.
The admissions process for secondary schools starts early in Term 1 of Year 6 at primary school. The council provides parents with a description of the process, details of each of the secondary schools and information on how to make their preferences known in the 2009 Admission to Secondary School Guide (pdf 2,621KB). The guide for 2010 will be available in September 2009. To use this and the other pdf files on this page, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have it on your computer, please use our advice page.
The guide and forms are also available from the Admissions Team, which can be contacted using the details at the foot of this page.
The Co-ordinated Secondary Admission Scheme (pdf 35KB) for secondary schools sets out how to apply for a secondary school place and the timetable for selection tests, applications and receiving an offer of a school place in 2010.
The admission arrangements for secondary schools set out how many places are available at each of these schools and the way in which places will be allocated if there are more parents seeking a place than available places at a particular school – the over-subscription criteria.
Community and voluntary controlled secondary schools
Medway Council is the admissions authority for community and voluntary controlled schools. The admissions arrangements are the same for each of these schools. A copy of the 2010 arrangements and over-subscription criteria are available here:
Community and Voluntary Controlled Secondary Admission Arrangements (pdf 29KB)
Foundation and voluntary aided secondary schools
The governing body of each voluntary aided primary school is the admissions authority. Each school has its own arrangements for 2010 admission. Some schools will need a supplementary form to be completed.
What is an Academy?
An Academy is a publicly funded state school, with an independent governing body, accountable to the government. It provides free education for students for all abilities in its local and wider communities. While Academies are independent of the Local Authority, they are nonetheless part of the wider family of schools and other educational institutions in their area.
Academies are established by sponsors from a wide range of backgrounds who are responsible for securing the very best education for students in their communities in partnership with the Principal and the Academy Leadership Team. There are two Academies that will be admitting pupils in September 2010 and their admission arrangements are available to be downloaded:
Casual admissions
People who are planning to or have just moved to Medway may need assistance in gaining school places for their children.
If you need a secondary school place, please contact the Admissions Team.
Medway Council operates 18 secondary schools, seven of which are selective or have a selective intake, for which a test may be necessary before a place can be considered. If a child is regarded as being best suited to a grammar school, then a place will generally be offered by a selective school. The procedure will be determined by factors including the year group of the child and the process applicable to the preferred school. Advice on this is available from the Admissions Team.
If a place is required in a non-selective school, parents should contact the Admissions Team for a casual admissions form. The child is then allocated a place at a school by the Admissions Team.
Should a child not be allocated a place at their preferred school, parents will be advised of any right of appeal they may have.
