Working with young people with disabilities

This aspect of the Aimhigher project aims to work with interested schools to provide an event to raise aspirations and provide information to disabled learners and young people with physical or sensory impairments.

Aimhigher can provide an event that will give students and parents an opportunity to find out about:

  • the extra financial help and support that is available for disabled students to progress to university;
  • what higher education is really like;
  • the difference between school, colleges of further education and universities;
  • the key issues of being at university:

    • budgeting,
    • making friends;
  • the options of staying at home or moving away;
  • the UCAS process.

There is no cost to the school for the activity provided. Aimhigher Kent and Medway provides all the activity materials. The events are delivered by sessional promotional officers who are current students who are able to bring their recent experiences of higher education to the event. Each activity is 50 minutes in length and can take place during school time or afterwards, to include parents.

Where possible, Aimhigher Kent and Medway prefers to work with smaller, targeted groups of 10-15 students with parents. At the end of each activity, students and parents will be asked to fill in an evaluation form.

If any school is interested in holding an event, please the Aimhigher Kent and Medway Project Officer on 01634 888957.
