Allotments

Take on an allotment for fresh, home-grown produce

How much will it cost?

A small annual fee is payable for renting an allotment. Crops can be produced at a fraction of what would be charged at the greengrocer's or supermarket. Other than the rent, all that needs to be invested is a few hours a week, the cost of a small selection of hand tools and a little bit of energy.

Exercise in the fresh air

The other benefits of being an allotment holder are exercise and relaxation. Allotments are a perfect opportunity to combine health and leisure pursuits. Allotments are part of Medway’s leisure facilities and many people enjoy gardening for exercise and the pleasure of growing plants and produce.

Help

All kinds of people rent allotments and there is the opportunity to make new friends with a similar interest. There is always someone on hand to give advice to newcomers and make them feel welcome.

Advice

The best time to start is in the autumn, when the plots can be dug over and prepared throughout the winter. However, many people only start getting enthusiastic when the spring arrives. It is, of course, still possible to produce excellent crops, plants and flowers by taking up a plot then.

The next step

Select the link at the top of the page for a list of the allotment sites with a map of where they are. There are additional sites administered by the parish councils in Medway. If there is not a Medway Council site nearby, contact the nearest parish council for help.
