What resources does MALSC hold?

Archives and records

Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre (MALSC) has extensive collections on Medway and the surrounding villages and rural areas. The collections are available to all and include:

  • the council’s historic archives,
  • Dean and Chapter records,
  • family and estate records,
  • shipping registers,
  • school and education records,
  • building plans
  • historic archives of private origin.

You can these holdings on the CityArk database.

Local studies collections

Local studies collections reflect the history, geography, economy and demography of Medway:

  • newspapers,
  • censuses,
  • poll books and electoral registers,
  • street and trade directories,
  • maps,
  • photographs,
  • books,
  • ephemera.

Local material is available for purchase in the MALSC bookshop and its local studies bookstock is listed on the Medway Libraries Catalogue.

Genealogists

The centre has a comprehensive range of resources available to anyone interested in researching their family history.

Selected resources such as parish registers and workhouse records have been microfilmed or digitised to conserve the original items.

Online parish registers, including those for north-west Kent, are available on Medway Ancestors. Other resources are available on microfilm or microfiche or on CD.
