Here you will find categories for the design section of the Medway Culture and Design Awards 2008. Entries in each category must demonstrate some or all of the requirements.
New build (completed)
The building needs to be in Medway and completed during the awards period (that is, between January 2006 and January 2008).
It can be from the private or public sector, commercial, domestic or retail. It should demonstrate outstanding quality and be representative of Medway’s future, making the best use of its site or be innovative in design or materials.
Heritage project
This must be in Medway and completed during awards period. It can be private, public, domestic or commercial, showing high standards and celebrating the heritage of Medway. The category includes refurbishment, restoration and interpretation.

Public realm/open space Supported by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), the project must be in Medway and can be either public or private open space.

Design
The project must be in Medway, from either the public or the private sector and should be a high-quality scheme or piece of design work that demonstrates that it has contributed to the promotion of the making of Medway.
What makes an outstanding development?
The judges will be asking the following questions:
- Does it work well for users and the public?
- Is it comfortable and convenient to use?
- Does it feel welcoming and safe?
- How does it benefit the local community and how were they involved in the project?
- Does it respond to and enhance its context – social, cultural, economic and physical?
- Is the scale of the development appropriate?
- Does it contribute to local character and the quality of the street?
- Does it offer variety, choice and a mix of uses?
- Is it well-used and lively at different times of the day?
- Is it used by a wide range of people?
- Is it sustainable?
- Is it built to last?
- Does it make good use of land?
- Does it use local or recycled materials?
- Is it designed to minimise energy requirements and reduce waste?
- Could it be adapted to different uses in the future?
- Is it easy to get to and through?
- How accessible is it by bike, foot, and public transport?
- Is it easy to find the front door?
- Can it be easily accessed by everyone, including elderly and disabled people?
- Does it look good?
- Does it use high-quality materials and is it well detailed?
- Is the design innovative?
- Is its setting attractive?

Additional material, such as photographs, location maps and details of the architect and developer could also be included these with the nomination form. Completed forms should have been sent to Medway Renaissance by Saturday, 31 May. Entry forms and submitted materials cannot be returned.
