Here you will find categories for the culture section of the Medway Culture and Design Awards 2008. All nominations should clearly demonstrate outstanding achievement, local contribution, originality and a commitment to encouraging access and developing new audiences. Only entries from practising individuals or groups demonstrating real excellence will be selected as finalists.
The judging panel will be looking for a variety of things in the categories below when assessing each entry.

New media Recognising innovation in web media, including gaming, webcasting, mobile technology, video, podcasting etc. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following: - outstanding innovation and creativity;
- content and functionality;
- new technologies.

Literature Recognising excellence in the field of literature and the written word. Open to entrants from any discipline and of any age. Entrants must provide evidence that their work has been published. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following: - excellence and innovation;
- creativity;
- contribution to continuing development of Medway’s literary heritage.

Heritage
Recognising a contribution to the preservation and promotion of local heritage on any scale. Open to heritage projects that have made a significant contribution to the local cultural field, for example through faith or tourism. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following: - a significant contribution to the local cultural field;
- the promotion and/or exploration of local heritage through cultural activity;
- building and shaping local identity;
- community engagement.

Visual arts
Recognises excellence in visual arts. Open to practising artists and makers, as well as organisations across contemporary visual and applied arts - including photography, public art, community art, decorative art etc. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following - excellence and innovation;
- new techniques;
- breaking new ground;
- reaching new audiences.

Fashion and design
Recognising outstanding contributions in breaking new ground or demonstrating new techniques or new approaches and design solutions. Open to designers in any discipline. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following: - breaking new ground;
- developing new techniques;
- innovative design solutions;
- opening up new markets.

Performing arts
Recognising the outstanding achievement of individual performers, groups, organisations, performances or productions reaching and developing new audiences. Entries should demonstrate some or all of the following: - reaching new audiences;
- excellence and innovation;
- contribution to the performing arts scene in Medway.

Music
Recognising excellence in music. Open to composers, bands, orchestras, choirs, soloists, management companies, labels etc. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following: - recording or performing excellence;
- contribution to the Medway music scene.

Partnership working
Given at the discretion of the judging panel in recognition of successful collaborations between partners - for example, public, private, individuals, groups, organisations or schools, to develop and deliver improvements in local cultural services or practices. Entries should clearly demonstrate some or all of the following: - partnership working to respond to or overcome new or complex challenges;
- improvements in services through joint working or initiatives;
- originality in the approach to partnership working;
- successfully establishing, developing and maintaining new partnerships.

Additional material, such as photographs, location maps and recordings of the artists or performers could also be included with the nomination form. Completed forms should have been sent to Medway Renaissance by Saturday, 31 May. Entry forms and submitted materials cannot be returned.
