The Norman conquest of 1066 had a considerable impact on Medway, the most visible signs of which can be seen today at Rochester Castle. Unlike the cathedral – where changes have been made century upon century – there is little of the castle which is not entirely Norman, except for the round ‘drum’ tower of the great keep. Centuries later and on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I, Upnor Castle was built to protect the Naval Dockyard against attack.
Today’s visitor can discover what life was like during times of war and peace through interpretation and models available at both castles.
