South Wood

South Wood in Hempstead is one of the richest remaining woodland areas in Medway. It has been worked for centuries for firewood and timber but is now managed by the council for its wildlife value. Resident birds include the great spotted woodpecker, song thrush and jay. The wood is particularly important, as it contains a population of dormice, which are rare throughout Britain and Europe.
