Great Lines is another of Medway's important sites, rising above Chatham and crowned by the Royal Naval War Memorial. Like the Darland Banks, it is mostly chalk grassland and it receives many thousands of visitors but few realise how close they are to unseen wildlife. Wild clary and squinancywort are two of the less common plants that are found here. The grassland and scrub also provide habitat for skylarks, meadow pipits, whitethroats, kestrels and other bird species.
The Great Lines also has enormous heritage value, thanks to its role in defending Chatham Dockyard, and the Chatham Lines, including Fort Amherst. The Great Lines form a key part of Chatham's World Heritage Site application. More information can be found on the project website at www.chathamworldheritage.co.uk.
