Darland Banks is the largest countryside site in Medway and lies between Gillingham and Chatham. It is mostly chalk grassland, edged with thorn scrub and woodland. Darland Banks contain many rare and beautiful plants, including Rock Rose, Fairy Flax, Kidney Vetch and several species of orchid. The grassland also supports good numbers of Chalk Hill Blue, Marbled White and over 20 other species of butterfly. Glow worms can also be seen on summer evenings.
The Banks are also the winter home of a number of cattle, whose job it is to graze off some of the summer’s growth of grass and the tips of invading scrub. Medway Council manages this site in partnership with Kent Wildlife Trust (www.kentwildlife.org.uk) which indicates how important it is for nature.
