Greenwich makes it a clean sweep
Congratulations are due to the men's and women's crews from the University of Greenwich following their wins at the annual Universities at Medway Boat Race on 23 May. The women's crew won the first race of the day by beating Canterbury Christ Church by six lengths to retain their title. The men followed up this victory by beating the Univeristy of Kent by the same margin and avenging their loss to Kent last year. This year's victories place Greenwich firmly as the most successful university since the races began in 2006, having entered five crews and won four races.
The race is now a firm fixture in Medway’s sporting calendar. Student rowers from the three universities which share the campus at Chatham Maritime – Kent, Canterbury Christ Church and Greenwich – battle it out for the right to call themselves rulers of the River Medway.
There are races for both women and men, with rowers once more tackling a course of approximately 2.6 kilometres, between Cuxton and the Esplanade in Rochester.
The event is organised by Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA), which represents all students at the shared Medway campus. UMSA’s Activities Co-ordinator, Claire Dicker, said that Medway Boat Race day is fast becoming a popular campus tradition.
Student rowers were trained by coaches at Medway Towns Rowing Club, the event was sponsored by Rochester Bridge Trust and the trophies and medals have been created by renowned Medway artist Paula Groves.
