Bookstart in Medway

What is Bookstart?

Bookstart is a national programme working through locally-based organisations to give free packs of books to babies, toddlers and pre-school children with guidance materials for parents and carers. This promotes a lifelong love of books and is based on the principle that every child should enjoy and benefit from books from as early an age as possible.

In October 2005 this scheme was extended nationally and now every child in the country is entitled to three Bookstart gifts.

How Bookstart benefits children

Sharing books with babies and toddlers is a wonderful way to increase language skills and helps children to understand their world. The first five years are the best time for learning to talk and most of a child's language is learnt from the adults around them. Babies and toddlers who love books begin reading sooner and have a better chance at school. For further information on Bookstart, including its extensive research on the impact of early reading with children, visit www.bookstart.org.uk.

How to get Bookstart gifts in Medway

The Bookstart+ Bag is for toddlers aged 18 months to two years. They are distributed through each child's pre-school. If a child does not attend a pre-school or has not received their bag, they can request one from their local library or from a Health Visitor.

Treasure Boxes are available to children aged three to four years. These are distributed through each child's pre-school. If a child does not attend a pre-school or has not received their box, they can request a Treasure Box from their local library.
